Precautions on aluminium paste handling and storage

Aluminium paste is a paste-form compound consisting mainly of flake-shaped aluminium particles and an organic solvent having a high boiling point. The following are key precautions for the safe handling and storage of Asahi Kasei Aluminium Paste(AKALP).

Before any handling and storage of AKALP, consult the relevant Material Safety Data Sheet (“MSDS”) of Asahi Kasei Corporation (“AKC”), which will be made available by AKC on request.

It is the responsibility of the user to investigate and determine the safety and suitability of using AKALP with any other material.

Handling
- Perform handling in conformity with national, state, and local law and regulations. (Also see MSDS)
- AKALP, in paste form, does not itself pose a dust explosion hazard, but any powder formed by its drying will pose a hazard of dust explosion if permitted to disperse in air at or above the explosion limit concentration.
- Handle AKALP well away from any ignition source, to prevent ignition of its constituent solvent. In the event of AKALP ignition, extinguish with a dry powder extinguisher or sand extinguisher. Never expose burning AKALP to water, as such exposure would result in generation of hydrogen gas.
- Avoid exposure of AKALP to water, acids, alkalis, oxidizers, metal oxidizers, or halides, as its exposure to any of these may result in generation of hydrogen gas.
- Avoid spilling of the AKALP during its transfer to and from any container.
- AKALP contains organic solvents (e.g., mineral spirit, solvent naphtha, toluene, xylene) which are subject to regulations as organic substances. Provide local ventilation in areas of handling and use. Exposure may cause skin, eye, and mucous membrane irritation. Use protective masks and gloves during handling and use, and avoid skin contact whenever possible.
- First aid
In case of skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water.
In case of eye contact, flush eye with clean water for 15 minutes and get medical attention.
- Disposal
Disposal must be performed in conformity with local, state, and national law and regulations. For information on proper disposal, contact AKC or an organization authorized to perform industrial substances disposal.

Storage

- Perform storage in conformity with national, state, and local law and regulations. (Also see MSDS)
- Keep away from direct sunlight, rainwater, and excessive dampness. Store indoors in sealed containers, at no more than 40°C and preferably at 15°C–25°C. For special leafing grades which are subject to stearic acid separation, storage indoors 15 °C–45°C is preferable.
- For leafing grades, in the event of stearic acid separation (apparent as whitish powder or grain) heat the AKALP to 30 °C–45°C in its container without exposure to any direct flame or ignition source and then mix well to ensure a uniform dispersion before use. In such cases, particular caution is necessary in opening any container due to the possibility of solvent vapor formation as a result of the heating.
- In the event that bulging occurs in any AKALP container during storage due to abnormal internal pressure, before opening the container slowly relieve the internal pressure by opening the vent screw in the container lid if present or by gradually opening the lid clamp while applying downward force on the lid to hold it in place and prevent its violent release. Special caution is necessary in such cases to ensure that the working area is well ventilated and completely free of any ignition sources, because of a high probability of hydrogen gas being present in the container.
- If separation of the solvent and aluminium flakes occurs as an effect of vibration during transport or certain storage conditions, thoroughly mix the AKALP to obtain a uniform dispersion before use. Such separation generally does not involve any problem in the AKALP quality or performance. Should any question or doubt arise concerning quality or performance, contact AKC.

Other precautions

- Any exporting of AKALP shall be performed at the responsibility of the exporting party, and must be performed in strict compliance with the relevant procedures and conditions under the law and regulations of the countries of export and import. Refer also to Section 16. Other information of the relevant MSDS.
- Contact AKC in advance concerning any envisioned use in applications other than paints and coatings, printing inks, or the others (agricultural vinyl sheet coating, fiber coating, magnetic card coating) described herein.
